Sweet Iron

Sweet Iron bits are made from iron and feature a distinctive blue color, achieved through heating during production. When exposed to humid air, Sweet Iron naturally develops an oxidized surface, gradually changing the color of the bit from blue to silver or brown-grey. This oxidation is a characteristic feature of Sweet Iron bits.

Sweet Iron mouthpieces are available in two thicknesses, indicated by a number in the product name. The 12 mm version is found in pony bits and bradoons, offering more space in the mouth. The 16 mm version is our standard thickness and is used in both regular bits and bradoons, making it suitable for a wide range of horses.

If a Sweet Iron bit is left unused for a period, an orange-brown layer of rust may form on the mouthpiece. This can be easily removed by wiping the bit with a damp cloth and does not affect its functionality.

Sweet Iron bits are suitable for all horses and come in a wide variety of mouthpieces, each designed for specific purposes.

Every horse is different, and selecting the right bit plays a key role in comfort, communication, and performance. A properly fitted bit prevents pressure points, slipping, and discomfort—helping your horse stay soft, responsive, and confident in the contact.

Eggbut

The Eggbutt cheekpiece is one of the most stable bit side pieces available. Its fixed rings keep the bit steady in the horse’s mouth, providing a consistent position and a relatively direct connection between the rider’s hand and the horse’s mouth. The design also prevents pinching of the lips, making bit guards unnecessary.

Bradoon

A bradoon is a slim snaffle bit used in a double bridle alongside a Weymouth. It typically has smaller rings and is placed above the Weymouth in the horse’s mouth.

To ensure balance and clear communication, the bradoon and Weymouth must be well-matched in size and design. A good combination helps avoid conflicting pressure and allows the rider to give refined, independent aids with each rein.

Wideport Segundo

The Wideport Segundo is a double-jointed mouthpiece with a movable tongue port. Unlike fixed port designs, this bit allows some lateral flexibility. The port reduces pressure on the tongue by redirecting it toward the bars, though the sharper angles of the port can create additional pressure points on the tongue.

Because the port can move, horses often find it harder to lean on this bit or place their tongue over it. This bit requires a refined hand and a good understanding of its effect.

While this is not one of our preferred mouthpieces, we do offer it because we recognise that there are exceptional combinations where this bit can be a suitable choice. We recommend it only for professional riders with experience, as incorrect use may cause discomfort or harm.
